Although Windows 10 allows you to configure multiple keyboard layouts when setting up a new installation, you can always add or remove layouts if you did not select the correct option or you now require to type in another language.

Usually, it is rare having to modify the input settings, but it’s not uncommon. For example, sometimes you may need to switch to the Spanish layout to write words that include special characters like «Ñ,» or prefer a different layout, such as the United States-Dvorak.

Whatever the reason it might be, Windows 10 includes easy to manage settings to add, remove, and change layouts for hardware and touch keyboards.

In this Windows 10 guide, we will walk you through the steps to add, change, and remove keyboard layouts in your current setup.

Otherwise, you might not be able to sign in. You can change your keyboard layout on the sign-in screen by tapping or clicking the language abbreviation button in the lower-right corner.

Change the keyboard layout or other method you use to type

Whenever you add a language, a keyboard layout or input method is added so you can enter text in the language. If you want to use a different keyboard layout or input method, you can add a new one or switch between the ones you have.

Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Settings, and then tap Change PC settings. (If you’re using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, click Settings, and then click Change PC settings.)

Your default keyboard layout or input method is the one that’s automatically used with the language you see Windows in (for example, the QWERTY keyboard for American English). If you want to keep your Windows language the same but use a different keyboard automatically, follow these steps:

Open Control Panel by swiping in from the right edge of the screen, tapping Search (or if you’re using a mouse, pointing to the upper-right corner of the screen, moving the mouse pointer down, and then clicking Search), entering Control Panel in the search box, and then tapping or clicking Control Panel.

Enter Add a language in the search box, and then tap or click Add a language.

Tap or click Advanced settings.

Under Override for default input method, choose the keyboard layout or input method you’d like to be your new default, and then tap or click Save.

Note: If you don’t see the keyboard layout or input method you want, then you haven’t added it to your input method list. For instructions, see the Add a keyboard layout or input method for a language section.

Install or change a display language

You can change the language Windows uses to display text in wizards, dialog boxes, menus, and other items in the user interface. Some display languages are installed by default, while others require you to install additional language files.

To install a Language Interface Pack (LIP), double-click the file to open the setup program. To install a language pack, follow these steps:

Click the Keyboards and Languages tab.

Under Display language, click Install/uninstall languages, and then follow the steps. How to add keyboard layout in windows 10. Смотреть фото How to add keyboard layout in windows 10. Note: The Display language section will be visible only if you have already installed a Language Interface Pack or if your edition of Windows supports a language pack. Language packs are available only in Windows 7 Ultimate and Windows 7 Enterprise.

When you change the display language, the text in menus and dialog boxes for some programs might not be in the language that you want. This happens because the program might not support Unicode.

Click the Keyboards and Languages tab.

Under Display language, choose a language from the list, and then click OK.

Note: If you don’t see the list of display languages, you need to install additional language files.

Change your keyboard layout

On the Language bar, click the Input language button, and then select an input language.

Custom keyboard layout with Windows 10

Trying get my custom layout (made with Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator 1.4) working with Windows 10.

Officially MKLC supports up to Windows 7 (and it worked for me with Windows 7), there are some posts about using it successfully with Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 (e.g. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-desktop/how-to-install-custom-klc-file-for-keyboard-layout/1651871e-cf33-4888-abc9-f7980b3c1cd0), but neither works for me with Windows 10.

The layout is installed successfully and even listed among keyboards to add, however when I try to use it, the preview is greyed out and keyboard icon does not appear in notification area (system tray), even though I have two keyboard layouts in my configuration.

Someone succeeded in making custom keyboard layout working under Windows 10?

I have tested Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator 1.4 under Windows 10 Pro. Installed my custom keyboard layout successfully and I can use it for typing. It also shows in the Language bar. Only the issue I face is that «Preview» is greyed out. I have not changed any registry settings though.

Microsoft should update this tool to add official Windows 10 compatibility. Very useful tool! Also in my opinion, this tool should be integrated with Windows just like «Character Map» or «Private Character Editor» tool.

I have just experimented and found a way to do this:

In the Language section of the Control Panel you can click Advanced Settings and activate «Use the desktop language bar when available». Then you have to have specified a language for the custom keyboard that you don’t use otherwise (setting it up as German (Liechtenstein) in lieu of my normal German (Germany) did the trick for me) and only then you can call it up in the language bar. I still can’t set up keyboard shortcuts to access my layout but I can remove the language bar afterwards.

Anyway, I hope there are easier ways of doing this (there really should be, what’s the point of removing support that existed in Win7?). Please answer to let me know if you find any or if any Support Engineer actually has anything to add to this discussion. 🙂

Actually MKLC 1.4 files work fine with Windows 10. Indeed, language bar disappears, after you change keyboard layout to the custom one. But, once you log off and and then log on again the language bar re-appears, and everything works great. The only minor nuisance is that there is no preview in language settings, but I can happily live without that 🙂

An alternative: Keyboard Layout Manager. Works with Windows 10, despite it isn’t mentioned there. It can duplicate an existing dll and modify it. This time the layout preview works, but there is no installer, therefore porting it to another computer isn’t straightforward. Also I didn’t try Keyboard Layout Manager with «dead» keys

(MKLC supports them OK).

Windows 10 is now listed as being supported for MKLC1.4

Looking at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=22339&ppud=4 it says for Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator 1.4 under »Requirements«: »Supported Operating Systems: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows XP Service Pack 1, Windows XP Service Pack 2« – This list seems out of date (Windows 7, possibly 8), but where exactly did you see Windwos 10 mentioned?

I cannot find the source I used to make that claim, Fritz. I know I didn’t make it up out of thin air but since it does not come up readily via ‘net searches, I have to withdraw the claim. Sorry.

I just downloaded and installed 1.4 and looked at the help. The latest supported version mentioned is Vista. I have not tried it yet on Win10.

I tried the »Liechtenstein« trick, adding this version of German plus automatically the Swiss keyboard that comes with »Deutsch Liechtensten«.

Then I tried to run the setup.exe out of the »Build DLL and setup package« by MSKLC (which I still have from my older computers). Normally this setup.exe ends with »Installation Complete« (for a » … setup package« and more see http://blogabissl.blogspot.de/2013/09/tastaturtreiber-andern-ab-windows-vista.html – German!).

In my new Windows 10 setup just starts, quickly displays something, too fast to see, and disappears with apparently nothing done. (When I »test« setup, Win 10 »succeeds« by telling me »Incompatible Program«.)

Later I saw an error message popup telling me that setup hadn’t found the downloaded keyboard files, and I »tried again« in this error popup, and setup succeeded!

The custom keyboard now successfully acts in Win 10.

Let’s type and see. My dear «french» and … signs work. But will the function keys be affected? (No). And how do I become «TrustedInstaller» to get to my system files, just in case? But that’s another bureaucratic hindrance.

Add or Remove Keyboard Layout in Windows 10

Recent Windows 10 builds come with a new «Keyboard» page in the Settings app. It completely replaces the classic options of Control Panel, which are removed starting with Windows 10 Build 17063. The new page allows users to change the display language, text-to-speech, speech recognition, and handwriting options. Here is how to add or remove a keyboard layout in Windows 10 because the UI for it has changed.

If you upgraded to Windows 10 Build 17074 and above, its new language options can look strange to you. Unlike previous releases, it does not include the Language settings UI in the Control Panel. Now you have to use Settings to configure language settings. With the Settings app, you can add or remove a keyboard layout in Windows 10.

For users who need to use more than one input language, it is required to add a different keyboard layout or input method to type in the required language. The language of the keyboard layout defines the set of characters available for the language.

As of this writing, Windows 10 Build 17083 is most recent release of the OS. It comes with special options in Settings which allow adding and removing keyboard layouts. Here is how to use the updated Settings app.

Cannot remove layout only in the 1803 version in any apparent way. Your last section (“Remove a Keyboard Layout in Windows 10”) describes how to entirely uninstall a language, not just the keyboard layout. Selecting ‘Options’ of a language there and then trying to remove the keyboard layout does not work. The Remove button is disabled. Please let us know if you find something.

I know the way to remove a keyboard layout but it does not work. I live in The Netherlands and on my PC and it has two keyboard layouts: NL en US INTERNATIONAL. In our country the default keyboard is not NL but USINTL.
In the login screen there is a keyboard choice icon with first choice NL which I do not want. When I remove this NL keyboard he taskbar does not how the choice icon anymore but when I log out and return to the login screen there is this icon again with first choice NL. I thougt I solved this by removing the NL keyboard layout seperately from al three accounts and in between a complete shut off and startup again. After this there is no icon in the login screen but after logout without shut off the login screen reappears with the choice icon again with the wrong first choice NL. I think I’m going crazy.
I tried to change the keyboard layout in the registry but there are a lot of places where I can do that and I donI know the exact way.

I have the same comment as George. I cannot remove a keyboard without removing the entire language pack. This was possible in the previous windows version.

The same.
I want to use UK English language with a US keyboard.
I can’t get rid of the UK keyboard and the computer keeps reverting to it,

As far as I just tried, you can add _another_ keyboard (eg, the one that you have available, such as US-INTL) for a specific language, and then remove the default keyboard for the specific language (such as Spanish), being left with the one you added (eg US-INTL keyboard) for that specific language.
It seems that the language installed has to have a keyboard associated with it.

This does NOT explain how to install a NEW keyboard layout package. It explayn how to select an already installed keyboard layout.

This awful glitch is SO old and STILL something in 2020. NOT ONLY THAT but Windows LOVES to add REEEEALLLY random layouts even if you didn’t added. “Oh but add the layout then remove it”. No it doesn’t work either.
