Install dgVoodoo (game had a windowed border without this)
Turn off 3D exceleration in Game and select a 4:3 resolution such as 1280×1024
Run the game as a link outside steam so you can have a fullscreen menu.
With this setup the game is playing perfectly.
Launching from Steam? The games main menu is playing in a window and the game exe occasionally stops responding. When I run it at 640×480 is seems to not do this but running as link outside steam allow me to go up to 1280×1024 without crashes.
Addition: there’s a retexture mod for JK1 too. It changes some colors but the resolutions are way higher, decide for yourself if you prefer sticking to the original or having better graphics.

Anyone knows how to record the game? NV ShadowPlay doesn’t work for me, it only shows the FPS. FRAPS perhaps? I’ve read that it can’t record the cutscenes. Any other tools?
I been going through my games to see what still works with my new Windows 10 upgrade. when i tried this game it seems to work just fine. showed the cutscenes, went to the menu and made adjustments and all that and even got to try the game. but after a tried it again today it says i need to set my display to 256 colors and crashes back to the desktop. anyone know a fix for this? im using a Lenovo running Windows 10 64 bit.
But after struggling and struggling to get this to work in both 10 and 8.1 I can say I finally found what seems to have worked for me.

All one have to do is to download the excellent dgVoodoo 2 (currently version 2.45), unzip it and copy the two files from «. \dgVoodoo2_45\MS\DDraw.dll» and «. \dgVoodoo2_45\MS\D3DImm.dll» to your game root directory. That’s it. No more to do.
dgVoodoo 2 is the standard DirectX wrapper for the most old games.
After doing this little file copy thing, you can select in game the desired resolution without to patch or modify anything.

This sort of works. I can’t run from Steam without causing the bugs I’m dealing with, but running directly from the folder does the trick.

THANK YOU YOU CONDESCENDING F*CK. Downloaded dgVoodoo2 like you said and IT F*CKING WORKED. PRAISE JESUS, IT FINALLY WORKS. Note for others. I still did have to delete «Jedi.exe» and run in Win XP SVC Pack 3. but it f*cking works. THANKS YOU SO MUCH SUROGAT.

I have been pulling my hair out for 2 to 3 hours reading countless posts, guides etc etc trying to get this game to work the way i want and this finally did the trick.

As of the Creators Threshold (the one with Game Mode) the process to start this game is ALMOST like it was supposed to be.
If you’re using another version of Windows 10 (Like, Anniversary Threshold (no Game Mode) or November Threshold), the method below, although recommended, might cause issues.
Try the first Method, if it doesn’t work, try the second one.
mklink JK.EXE JediTest.exe
(Of course, replace «JediTest.exe» with whatever you renamed the original JK.exe to.)
And that’s it! Now you should be able to launch JK via Steam like a normal game.
Sometimes, Jedi Knight refuses to collaborate. Sometimes it plays cutscenes and manages the menu in a window and the game in fullscreen (the game had no Windowed Mode), sometimes it causes some weird issues, so if you’re still having issues, you can install a Wrapper.
A Wrapper basically translates the commands from the original architecture (DirectDraw, in this case) to a more modern one (Like, DX10, DX11 or OpenGL).
Keep in mind that, contrary to what I previously thought, you still need to have DirectPlay installed for it to work.
The benefits of using one is that you can monitor FPS through tools like MSI AfterBurner, and you might enforce a Windowed mode, if you need it.

At the original writing of this guide, it was the link that said «dgVoodoo v2.53».
WARNING: Now it says «v2.54», but some users are getting a virus detection by some antivirus softwares. Although I believe this is a false positive, it’s better to be safe and stick to the tested and working v2.53 version.
If you try to open the game now, it’ll work, but there are some watermarks on it. So let’s remove them:
It happened to me once: you start playing the game, and after the mandatory resolution change, eveything but the HUD is black. Even raising the gamma won’t help.
If that happens, go back to the options menu in the game, and under the Display tab, change your resolution to anything that doesn’t say «[ModeX]». Preferably above 800×600.
This only happens if you check «Enable 3D Acceleration» (Which you should check to make the game pretty), so I won’t get into much detail how to do this. If you’ve checked that option, you know where it is.
We COULD, but there are two issues, that all boil down to the same issue: Jedi Knight’s weird resolution.
I have Screen Capture Software AND an AverMedia Capture Card, but both of them are VERY sensitive to resolution changes. They IMMEDIATELY stop recording when they detect a Resolution Change, and I’d like to make that video with as little cuts as possible, while showing evidence that the process works.
I could use it to show the process and film with an external camera the monitor to display the game running. Would you guys like If I made a video like this?

Если дистрибутив игры был загружен через торрент, то никаких гарантий работы быть в принципе не может. Торренты и репаки практически никогда не обновляются через официальные приложения и не работают по сети, потому что по ходу взлома хакеры вырезают из игр все сетевые функции, которые часто используются для проверки лицензии.
Такие версии игр использовать не просто неудобно, а даже опасно, ведь очень часто в них изменены многие файлы. Например, для обхода защиты пираты модифицируют EXE-файл. При этом никто не знает, что они еще с ним делают. Быть может, они встраивают само-исполняющееся программное обеспечение. Например, майнер, который при первом запуске игры встроится в систему и будет использовать ее ресурсы для обеспечения благосостояния хакеров. Или вирус, дающий доступ к компьютеру третьим лицам. Тут никаких гарантий нет и быть не может.К тому же использование пиратских версий — это, по мнению нашего издания, воровство. Разработчики потратили много времени на создание игры, вкладывали свои собственные средства в надежде на то, что их детище окупится. А каждый труд должен быть оплачен.Поэтому при возникновении каких-либо проблем с играми, скачанными с торрентов или же взломанных с помощью тех или иных средств, следует сразу же удалить «пиратку», почистить компьютер при помощи антивируса и приобрести лицензионную копию игры. Это не только убережет от сомнительного ПО, но и позволит скачивать обновления для игры и получать официальную поддержку от ее создателей.
Чтобы исправить эту ошибку, нужно найти необходимую библиотеку DLL и установить ее в систему. Проще всего сделать это с помощью программы DLL-fixer, которая сканирует систему и помогает быстро найти недостающие библиотеки.

So before I spent another couple of bucks to buy two games that once again don’t work, I just want to ask very simply:
Do the versions of Jedi Knight and/or Mysteries of the Sith available here work fine on Windows 10 right this second? What’s the general consensus?
I can deal with it looking a little wonky, or controlling weird, or taking awhile to launch. I just want to make sure that it’s possible to play.
They work «fine», but require some tinkering/setup before you can play comfortably.
This thread describes all the hoops I had to jump through to get them to work. But it’s all doable.
They sometimes crash, but not too often.
Also, hardware acceleration won’t work, you’ll have to settle for software renderer, which means the games won’t look their best ever.
I’m not sure if that meets your definition of «fine». Personally, I’d put it under «good enough».
«Good enough» is fine by me. I was really disappointed when the Steam version turned out to be such a catastrophe, so if it can run at all I’m thrilled.
Basically, so long as I can play and beat it, it’s great, haha.
For Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 you need to download dgVoodoo2 from here:
Disable any compatibility options you may have enabled, you don’t need them and they may interfere with dgVoodoo2.
Then run the game, create profile, etc and from Setup go to Display and click on «Enable 3D acceleration». Select a 4:3 resolution from the list and press Ok.
The game should run perfectly, or at least as good as it did back when it was new. Music, sounds, 3D acceleration, etc work perfectly fine here. From dgVoodoo2’s panel you can even enable a couple of extra effects like antialiasing.
Note that if you choose a very high resoluton you’ll have tiny UI in game. Also note that dgVoodoo2 needs a fast GPU. Although for JK you might be fine since it has very simple geometry. The latest version (2.5) has a dynamic shader compilation option that should speed up things in case it is slow for you, but i haven’t tried it. Read the README.
