10 Downing Street or ‘Number 10’ as the British call it, is one of the most famous addresses in the world 1) E) as it has been the home of British prime ministers since 1730. However, it is also a very busy place where hundreds of people work and where many official functions, Cabinet meetings and state dinners take place. Many people will immediately recognise the front of the building 2) C) because the Prime Minister and other well-known politicians often make important announcements in front of its famous big black door.
Number 10 was originally given to the first prime minister, Sir Robert Walpole, as a gift, 3) A) but he wanted it to be used by all future prime ministers. Before he moved in, though, he joined 10 Downing Street to the large house behind it and had some alterations made. So even though Number 10 looks like an ordinary terraced house from the outside, 4) G) inside it is an extremely grand place. There are many beautiful rooms with elegant décor and fine furniture including the State Dining Room, the Study, the Terracotta Room and the White Drawing Room. There are portraits of every past prime minister hanging on the walls of the Grand Staircase 5) B) and in the Cabinet Room, where government ministers meet to discuss important issues. The table in this room is boat-shaped so that the Prime Minister can always see everyone sitting around it!
The Prime Minister’s private home is a furnished flat on the second floor, once described by Margaret Thatcher (British Prime Minister from 1979-1990) as ‘living above the shop’. The Prime Minister also has his own study 6) D) where he works and reads. There, he often meets colleagues, receives important guests, makes phone calls or gives interviews.

St.-Petersburg is known as an open-air museum. The city’s theatres, each of them with its unique architectural style, are an essential part of its cultural heritage. Among them, between Galernaya street and English Embankment in the city centre, shines a small cosy mansion house which belonged to the famous patron of the arts Baron Sergei Pavlovich von Dervis at the end of the 19th century. It’s beautiful on the outside, but it doesn’t stand out from most buildings in Saint Petersburg. Its address is 33, Galernaya street.
The baron was a big fan of the theatre, so in his mansion, he set up a special hall for home plays. This hall is called White Hall. It isn’t really large, with only 170 seats, although it is not modest. Each centimetre of the White Hall is decorated with an elegant sculpture, huge mirrors, finely painted frescoes, and gold stucco. Everything is decorated in the best traditions of rococo and, at the same time, the hall has excellent acoustic properties. The music in this hall is just fascinating to the audience.
The history of von Derwiz’ mansion is like that of thousands of other buildings in Saint Petersburg. After the revolution of 1917, the mansion was plundered and was used for various purposes in the following years. Who knows what would have happened to von Dervis mansion later, but in 1998 the building was given to The St. Petersburg Chamber Opera, the State Chamber Music Theatre.
The mansion needed serious repair, but the troupe that at last found their own home and own stage still decided to play their performances here. They were trying to convince the city authorities that the building was in disrepair until one day a large piece of stucco collapsed into the auditorium. A 10-kilo lump fell from the ceiling but fortunately, no one was hurt.
As a result of Chamber Music Theatre troupe efforts, restoration work began in 2000. Over the years of restoration, the luxurious interiors of the mansion were recovered from devastation and repaired including the Moorish Room with its gilded ornaments, the Maple Room decorated with picturesque panels, the Winter Garden designed as a bizarre grotto, the Red Room, an example of the Italian Renaissance, and other rooms.
Today all beauty of the restored rooms is accessible to the audience of the theatre «Saint Petersburg Opera», which can see one of the most amazing historical sights of Saint Petersburg, and enjoy opera plays as well.

Доказывать городской администрации, что здание находится в аварийном состоянии, пришлось ровно до того момента, когда произошло обрушение лепнины в зрительный зал. С потолка упала десятикилограммовая глыба (к счастью, никто не пострадал).
В результате усилий труппы Камерного музыкального театра в 2000 году начались реставрационные работы. За долгие годы ремонта удалось возродить из разрухи и реконструировать роскошные интерьеры особняка: Мавританскую гостиную, покрытую позолоченным орнаментом, Кленовую гостиную, украшенную живописным панно, Зимний сад, сделанный в виде причудливого грота, Красную гостиную (образец итальянского Ренессанса) и другие помещения.
Сегодня вся красота отреставрированных помещений доступна зрителям театра «Санкт-Петербургъ Опера», которые могут не только посмотреть на одну из самых удивительных исторических достопримечательностей Санкт-Петербурга, но и насладиться оперными пьесами.
